Naomi Campbell calls out the fashion industry for being racist: “We’re all aware that we need to introduce more women of colour….It’s not for myself, but the younger girls who come up to me and say ‘We didn’t get used this season, we didn’t do this, someone used 81 models and didn’t use one of us.’ In that respect if they come up and talk to me, and I’m able to speak on their behalf then I will…”
word! indisputable.
I appreciate what Naomi is trying to do. I really do. But after how many years are black models gonna be ignored and relegated to doing a project where “an ethnic model” is required. Women of colour (South Asian, Asian, Black, Latin, Mixed etc) are not accessories or tokens or a look of the month. The Fashion industry does not care unless it becomes lucrative. I personally am sick of it!
Here’s an idea corner the “ethnic” market…hell monopolize it and make a shit load of money! DON’T WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO VALIDATE YOUR WORTH OR YOUR BEAUTY. Do what Tyra did…create your own outlet for using diverse types of beauty. As annoying as people say Tyra is…I have so much respect for what she was trying to do with AMNTM. She complained but she DID something about it!
I damn well don’t need editors at Vogue Magazine or Karl Lagerfield (sp?) to put a black face on any of their projects to determine the beauty of black women or any women of colour. Women of colour (whatever ethnicity) are beautiful period!
